The IW-NET project took part at the 9th Transport Research Arena (TRA) in Lisbon, Portugal from 14 to 17 November 2022.

TRA is a European research and technology conference on transport and mobility that covers all transport modes and all aspects of mobility. The TRA 2022 theme was “Moving together – reimagining mobility worldwide”. This year the event gathered more than 2 000 visitors and over 600 exhibitors.

The IW-NET project showcased its mid-term results and shared with the public its vision for the future of inland navigation at its stand, kindly hosted by the Innovation Village of the European logistics platform “ALICE”, in Pavilion 2 (stand 2.13).

The IW-NET stand was animated by the IW-NET partners: Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics, University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, European Inland Waterway Transport Platform, bremenports GmbH & Co. KG, INLECOM, AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH, Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France, and Smart Freight Centre. Have a look at the IW-NET introduction movie presented at the stand.

Nils Meyer-Larsen, the IW-NET Coordinator, from Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics presented a poster on the project.

Moreover, some of the findings of the project were presented during interactive panel discussions and thematic scientific sessions. So, Laura Hörandner from the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria presented a paper written together with Lisa-Maria Putz-Egger, Patrick Specht, and Beil Denise “Standardized logistics emission calculation in inland navigation: Status quo and challenges ahead”.

In this scientific work, the authors made an overview of emission calculation in inland navigation. Their findings show that due to the use of different input parameters, there is a high disparity in CO2 emissions while using different calculation tools: EcoTransIT World, CarbonCare, and manual calculation with the GLEC Framework 2.0. International standards need to be established for IWT to avoid such divergence.

The showcase of the IW-NET project was well appreciated by the audience and increased awareness of the IWT problematics and future developments.

Many thanks to the IW-NET consortium members who have supported the IW-NET presence at this cornerstone event.
