On February 21st and 22nd, 2023, the IW-NET consortium, consisting of 26 project partners from different countries all over Europe, held its 4th Consortium Meeting in Bremen, Germany, hosted by the project coordinator ISL. The project’s goal is to develop a multimodal optimization process across the EU transport system, increasing the modal share of inland waterway transport and supporting the European Commission’s ambitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector.

The meeting began with an overview of the IW-NET objectives and roadmap, followed by productive workshops where consortium members and Application Scenario leaders discussed the strategic impact of the project’s results in approaching the objectives set out in the NAIADES III Action Plan, European Green Deal, Fit for 55 Package, and the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy. These discussions resulted in valuable insights and outcomes that were shared to help the consortium achieve its goals.

The first day concluded with a tour of Bremen’s industrial harbour on the vessel “Hanseat”, showcasing the Bremen project scenario on Intelligent Inland Waterway Traffic Management and advanced shore power solutions. The second day focused on aligning the project’s outputs with the European Commission’s strategic initiatives and preparing for the IW-NET Final Event.

The IW-NET consortium is committed to an efficient and competitive IWT sector by addressing infrastructure bottlenecks and fostering the adoption of new technologies, such as new vessel types, alternative fuels, digitalization, automation, and IoT technologies.

Overall, the IW-NET Consortium Meeting was a great success, full of exciting insights, results, and inspiring conversations. The consortium thanks all the participants for their valuable contributions and look forward to sharing more information during the final event with a broader audience.
